Cinderella

"She saw the world, not always as it was, but as it could be…with perhaps a little bit of magic."

Yesterday my friend and I went to see the new Cinderella movie.  I think we were the oldest people there who were not accompanying small children but never the less we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The film follows the original fairy tale but you gain a much better insight into the characters personalities than in the original animation.

Cinderella is played by the beautiful Lily James. I think this is the first thing I have seen her in as I didn't watch Downtown Abbey. Lily has a very youthful look and she suited the character of Cinderella as not only is she beautiful but she has a lovely speaking and singing voice.  Although this adaptation of Cinderella is not as musical as the original animation, music was still a big aspect of the film.

Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters played by Cate Blanchett, Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger were amazing.  You really wanted to hate these characters but you couldn't because they were so funny. This film showed more of the emotional and psychological mistreating of Cinderella by the girls than the animation could, which I think made the story much more modern.

Having not watched Game of Thrones I also did not recognise Richard Madden who played the Part of the Royal Prince. Richard and Lily made a very attractive couple and he was indeed a very charming Prince. His on screen relationship with the King, played by Derek Jacobi was extremely believable.  The whole cast were amazing but I cannot forget to mention the lovely Helena Bonham Carter who played the part of the Fairy Godmother.

Something I really liked about the film is how closely they kept the costume to the original animation. For this we have to thank the amazing costume designer, Sandy Powell.

"This is perhaps the greatest risk any of us will ever take—to be seen as we truly are."

If you are a fan of the Disney Classic animation or just of Princess stories in general you will love this film!

Have you seen it yet?  What did you think?
