I wanted to bring a little bit of Autumn into our little flat so decided to make some candle holders out of recycled glass jars. I cleaned up some jars and gathered some bits and pieces I wanted to use to decorate them.
- Beads
- Buttons
- Sequins
- Artificial Leaves
- Wire
- Tissue Paper
For the first candle holder I chose a smaller Jar (this is actually an old coffee jar) and the artificial leaves. I used a glue stick to hold the leaves in place while I arranged them how I wanted them before then coating the leaves in PVA glue. I also covered the rest of the jar however I would not recommend doing this as it left small bubbles and uneven lumps and bumps and these show up when the candle is lit.
For the second I chose a taller jar and wanted to work with the buttons and beads. I wrapped the wire around the top of the jar and then started to add the bits as I wanted. I used a 2 bead, 1 button pattern. I wasn't entirely happy with this one either as I thought it looked a bit plain.
I also had some silver artificial leaves. These would have been better if they were gold but I still love the effect these give. I used 3 leaves and glued these around the jar. Once the glue was dry I cut off the excess and used some wire to secure the top.
For the final jars I used tissue paper. For one I used strips of paper and the other I cut the paper into little leaf shapes and only partially covered the jar. I added the beading from the one of the first jars I did over one of these.
I think the ones using tissue paper are my favourites. I would also like to try painting directly onto the jars and maybe using glitter.
